A Season of New Beginnings
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NLT
They say spring is the season of new beginnings, but I’m not sure how many people actually take this to heart. In fact, spring is just about the time most people have given up on their New Year’s resolutions or goals they laid out at the beginning of the year. I mean, even I find myself rolling my eyes at the lofty goals I typed up in pretty font and vibrant colors, printed, and posted on my refrigerator.
But, what if instead we took this time to reset. To renew our mindset. Instead of focusing on a laundry list of things you’d like to accomplish by the end of the year, focus on one or two things you can accomplish in a month or, even, two months. For example, I decided this would be the year I launched a blog. So, did I burn the midnight oil every night for two weeks and suddenly have a fully developed website filled with content. Ha! Absolutely not.
I made a list.
I refused to overwhelm myself with completing the big picture, and started with a brush stroke…knowing eventually my vision would appear.
So, back to the list. I spread out several tasks throughout several months. My goal was to just get started. For example, some of the tasks on my list for January included: choosing a name and purpose for the blog, signing up for Squarespace, and researching photographers. The next month, my list included designating a specified amount of days to working on the website, booking a photographer and creating an editorial calendar.
I said all of this to say, you don’t have to have it all figured out.
While listening to a compilation of motivational speeches one morning, I heard a quote and wrote it down. I placed this sheet of paper with the quote scribbled on it on my laptop as a daily reminder. The quote reads, “You don’t have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great.”
Stop waiting for the perfect time. It. Does. Not. Exist. You don’t have to wait for a milestone birthday, New Year’s Eve, or New Year’s Day.
Start now. It’s your season.
